Bitumen, usually known as asphalt is an organic substance produced through the distillation of crude oil. Bitumen is known for its water-resistant and glutinous properties and is composed of complex, heavy residual hydrocarbons. Bitumen is produced through the process of fractional distillation The product has the melting point of around 115 Celsius which makes it ideal for usage in road constructions, and as well as it serve its use in paving and roofing applications.
The bitumen is used as a binder in asphalt for roads, runways, foot paths and parking lots. Gravel and crushed rock are combined with bitumen, and is then applied to road constructions. The use of bitumen not is not limited to the roofing industry only, but is ideal for sealing and insulating building materials such as carpet tile backing and paint. Moreover, the bitumen has various other uses including in the soundproofing, mildew protection, a binder in briquettes, for fence post coating, and as a backing to several materials.
